What would I do in a C++ job?

Posted 29 January 2009 - 05:23 PM

I'm sure that this all depends on many different things,

But what would a c++ (or other language) programming job entail?

Would I be asked to make apps that did a certain thing, debug code, or other stuff?

I'm considering programming as a career and think I should probably check out the idea. Other stuff like salary, working on site or from home, etc. factor into it but I'm mainly wondering what a typical programming job would involve day to day.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Many applications are made in C++ today.
Most games are made in C++ too.

So you can make everything from a calculator in a console to pretty much anything you like in C++ so jobs can differ from developing simple applications to developing games, a spaceships navigation system, etc.

The range is pretty much limitless.
What you do in a day depends on where and what you do, salary is different from job to job also.

<Source: Careerguide 2008 fall>

A game programmers salary can be from
58.000$ (57.665$ to be exact) to ~94.525$ in a year depending on skill and how long you have been working. The lowest are less then 3 years, highest are 6+ years. This vary from where in the world you are working too. U.S has avg. salary of 60,296$ if you worked < 3 years.

If you know a company that you think you like call/email them and ask for the avg. salary a programmer has at them.

So you can earn a lot of cash depending on you skill and where in the world and what your working with. Hope this help.

Okay, so what you did each day could be anything from writing code for a new feature of Microsoft Word to fixing bugs in the Enterprise's navigation system. What you are asked to do could be anything a company needed, so you could be asked to write anything. Still curious about examples and stuff. I'm not sure how stressful an actual job might be. What would you recommend to an amateur thinking about a possible career? Taking classes, meeting people, and talking with companies

Depends on the specific job description, but its a safe bet you'll be working with C++.

If you work with C++ you'll probably work with code. ^_~

Anyway~ I'm in a "database application developer" position, but I work on sites and software. I've worked here less than 3 months and already used about 7 or 8 languages.

Varies from day to day.
