question about game mods

Posted 03 February 2009 - 11:37 AM

I am in college learning c++ and some vb.net but i have no idea how the mods for games come into existance. For example, i just a got a mod working for elder scrolls that allows you to play with other ppl but the computer caracters will not sink. ofcourse the mod is advanced enought to allow for that yet but how in the world did anyone get that far with the mod. I dont even know what code elder scrolls is written in much less how to view the source code for it(if that is even possible) and without the source code how would even know how to start making a mod for the game. another point at hand... i got a logitech g15 keyboard with a display on the keyboard itself. the display is great but you have to find mods for it to work with games. logitech dont make the mods, players do but how do they do it. i know there are alot of programmers out there but it seems these people have been doing it for years and id be hard pressed to find someone here at college can do it. are these people that good or is there a trick or do the people who do it have inside information about the game thats not available to the general public?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

I'm not sure exactly what it is your asking, are you wonder how to write the games? Mods for the games? How to get your keyboard to work? Also you should separate blocks of text over each idea as one giant wall of text is hard to read.

lol sorry when i start typeing i just keep going sometimes. but what im asking is
how do people make mods for games?
were do they begin?
how do they learn how to make the mods work with hardware like my g15 when they start from scratch with no information about how to get the information out of the game or how to make it work with the keyboard.
How do people create these mods for games so that they can be played in multiplayer when the whole essance of the game was designed to be single player.
I mean i can type all day on code, weeks even and and not have an entire megabyte of code and the people who make these mods have 30 to 40 megabyte files for the mod.
Also there not getting paid to do it and while mods are very cool i cant see myself spending months on a mod for free just play say elder scrolls in multiplayer

Modifications, and usually the people that release the game either release the source too, or document how to interact with (usually their API) the game to make your own modifications

The Quake series * is free.
Doom is free.

It's on a (their official?) website.

To make a mod, you typically obtain the SDK (Software Development Kit) provided by the game developers themselves.

Well technically none of those games are free, just the engines.

Also, the Quake IV engine is not free last time I checked.

I'm sorry, before I lose it to people who have to use every last technical detail yet complain at you for following the rules, let me rephrase this for you:

The Quake series with the exception of the latest and greatest (meaning "up to" Quake III/Quake III expansion sets) is free to download the source code files.

Quote

This is the combined source code for Quake III Arena and Quake III: Team Arena. It can be used to build the 1.32b point release or the Team Arena release. It contains buildable project files and all source code as well as prebuilt tool executables available under the GPL.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Please point out where I can (legally) download the artwork, models, and sounds for Quake I-IV.

Please point out where I can (legally) download the source code for Quake IV or Doom 3 (id Tech 4).

Edit: Oops, meant id Tech 4 not 5.

www.google.com OR legally buy the game - I'm sure they sell it via the 'net now.
