I use OOo to open .docs all the time, although i don't have access to the most recent edition of Office. It has worked for me so far when I save my documents documents as Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc) in Save As..

I'm sure it's been mentioned before but just in case you haven't heard of this:
The Ultimate Steal by Microsoft gives students a copy of office 2007 ultimate for $60/£40. It's not free but its a substantial discount. I'm not sure if it's available outside the US/UK.
You need a university email address to order.

First, I attend a french cegep (kind of a college) in quebec, Canada. Obviously, my school wasn't listed on the school list and I do not own an ISIC. I simply sent an email to the support of dreamspark, and received an email within an hour with a personalized link that allowed me to verify as a student on dreamspark. I did not have to send any document, proof or whatever. I did this a year ago and since then, I'm always able to log in and download whatever is available through DreamSpark. Please note that dreamspark is bound to your Windows LIVE account.
I think this is a GREAT opportunity offered by Microsoft.
As for "The ultimate Steal", I could also use that offer using my "cegep" email.
P.S. For information, cegep here is between high school and University.
