Rock or Rap [poll/discussion]

Posted 17 February 2009 - 04:50 PM

Hi!
(read intro, or skip and just post your opinion)
It's pretty obvious that programmers are usually above average intellegence (I'm not saying anyone's better than anyone else). I'm a sophmore in highschool now, and I've noticed that Rap/Hip-hop has almost taken over my school, most people here havn't even heard of Led Zepplin, Greatful Dead, Guns N' Roses, or even The Beatles!

I want to know what we (as a whole) think, so post your results, and try to prove the other person wrong.

(no flaming/spamming/trolling PLEASE!)

Results:

Rock:

Rap:

What most don't know is that Rap actually starts with a silent "C"

It really just depends. I hate it when people insult other genres of music just because they dislike it. Everyone is entitled to their own musical tastes, and just because you don't agree with them doesn't mean you have to right to say that a music genre sucks.

That being said. I love both genres. I will listen to rap when I'm in the mood to relax or rock when I just want to listen to some harder music.

I also enjoy a multitude of different genres, although most of them being sub-genres of rock. For example, Progressive, Metal, etc..

The only rap that's decent is actually a different genre(rock, jazz, ect.) So definitely Rock!

Have you even given rap a chance? I'm not talking about just the stuff on the radio because I don't even like that, but I mean artists you've probably never heard of.

Jurassic 5, Atmosphere, Flobots, Sage Francis, and Del are all really good. Don't just go off what you hear on the radio and in the mainstream. Besides, most of that is Hip-Hop which is quite a bit different.

I've heard half of those bands back in the 90's, and they still suck. Sorry. Rock ftw.

I don't generally like rap. However, it sometimes leaks into rock and alternative. I'll admit a fondness for groups like Linkin Park and Gorillaz, which have rap elements. For some reason, I find rap more palatable when it's more musically complex than a just a base beat.

Yeah. I completely agree. The main MC of the Gorillaz is Del who is also a solo rapper. I think you'd like Jurassic 5. They use a lot more musical elements than just a beat and chord progression.

Ok that's fine. That's your opinion. Just don't go insulting other people because they like something you don't. I like rock as well, as I previously stated. I'm just musically diverse enough to recognize good music when I hear it, despite the label it's been given.

I went to an all white highschool that had less than 100 students in my graduating class & they all listened to Rap (or country).

Btw, I love living in the city now :)

Most of what I listen to doesn't have an easy description. Digital Hard Core?

It's mostly Metal, some of it Digital noise. Most of it is just horrible & socially unacceptable.

If you think it's horrible, why do you listen to it?

I don't think it's horrible. I like the randomness, the uniqueness. Something about the way it flows. The crunch.

All of my friends, & everyone else I've ever met think it's horrible.
