All the kids at my school either listened to rap or country. They pretty much divided themselves: hillbillies vs wiggers + throw in a few emos.

Definitely Rock. I listen to progressive rock almost exclusively. Post rock is great too. I also like classical/jazz influences in my music. I really don' listen to rap but it just doesn't seem like a genre I'd like. My high school is also almost entirely pop/rap and country(with a few emos) , it all depends on what the cool kids are listening too. I only know one classic rock fan in the entire place, so musically I am isolated.

I thought I would weigh in shortly.. I addressed this issue recently in a blog post response to RollingStone's top 100 singers.

In short the list was created by people in all levels of the industry (singers, bands, directors, producers, DJs, and so on across all genres) so there is no claim of 'subjective liberal hippy Rolling Stone writers'. Straight from the horse's mouth.

http://www.rollingst..._all_time/print

In short I point to the lack of rappers and hiphop folk on there (as well as dbag current age country folk). Stellar!

Axel's on there (64)
Cobain's on there (45)
Morrison is 47
Mick's about 16
and there are a few more sprinkled through out. The ballots are interesting as well.

In short, and by the numbers, Rock > Rap.

This is not to say that I do not enjoy a bit of early 90's rap, but anything current is pretty much crap. (Well not crap entirely since I do love hearing TI's "what ever you like' while at a strip club, but that's about it.)

Does it have lasting power? Probably not.

Will some of the one hits end up on the 'oldies station' when I am in my iron lung? Sure.

Will anyone claim 'Soldier boy' changed their life like hearing Hendrix for the first time? Probably not.

My blog post

One last thing - my tolerability for current age rap is sufficiently increased at house parties and depending if the broad I am talking to digs it. Country on the other hand will never be tolerated. Go bemoan screwing your cousin and her hound dog somewhere else *but* in my ears.

Thanks for the list. Playing devil's advocate, it is RollingStone; from the name onward they've had a particular focus.

I'd argue a lot of the positions. When they have Bjork, and she's at 60, something has gone very, very wrong. :P

I really don't like doom metal. I listen to metal to set my spirit on fire and therefore need battle metal that has either an upbeat sound or a furious sound. There's way better viking metal than Amon, just ask Thorian if he is still here.

As for rap, it all sounds like free loops to me. I'm sure finding a good rap song is hard because it's buried under the poorly composed excuses to rattle all the nearby car windows with your teh bass.

LOL! Took me a minute to worry that out. Damn, now I'll have that stuck in my head.

What's worse, I think it's on the ipod. Must... not... play...

I will go ahead and offer my personal opinion.

I have listened to many different sub-genres of rock and rap, and of the two i prefer rap. Well, not so much rap as R&B, or basically rap with a little less gangster and a bit more beat in the background. I don't really like the sound of electric guitars or any instrument that really makes up rock, nor do i care for the style of music in general. I can stand not-so-hardcore rock, but when it comes to death metal, well, i don't exactly find a guy screaming with electric guitars playing in the background the best music of all time. I don't prefer to rap just because i wanna be some big gangsta or something either, i guess i just prefer the style of music.
