What's the best program to use to compress large .mpg files into smaller .avi files?

Just do a search in google. Its what I use, and I've never had a problem.

2 video files that were compressed from 200Mb to 2mb and 400k

i've used a freeware program called virtual dub

I have Virtualdub, but am unsure of how to use it to compress .mpg's. Do I just open the file and 'save as AVI'?

go into video and audio menus and set codecs and compression rates and stuff there, then save to avi

Roughly, how long should it take to convert an .avi to .mpg (for DVD Player viewing)? I am using Aare's AVI to MPEG converter.

i've used a program in days past that did some mpeg work, i think its was called flask mpeg, or something like that


or just get media cleaner

There are a number of precompiled windows binary versions of ffmpeg. Here's one:

Not sure if the gui will help with converting out of winmedia though.

It's basically the swiss army knife of transcoders. Way more features than Cleaner. And - it's free!

I downloaded it, ran ffmpeggui.exe, and it only has options for audio converting.

Then skip the gui and (eek!) use the command line. It's got everything.
