I prefer to be a computer programmer because the pay is better and I generally don't have to feel responsible for other people expensive equipment.

They are two different things, but that doesn't mean you cant like one more.
I enjoy programming more then hardware. The feeling of creation is better for me when i program.

The topic was not "compare and contrast" it was "which would you rather be: programmer or technician?".
Topic probably should have been made as a poll.

How many computer programmers does it take to screw in a light bulb? None, that's a hardware problem.

How many help-desk technicians does it take to screw in a light bulb? None, we don't support that function.
I couldn't choose one over the other.

i actually like both. programming is all about coding and tech work is more hardware and a little more active. i would want to be an IT manager focusing on networking and security, somehow...

Programmer.
A programmer can create something that millions of people will use, where a Technician is hardware and usually not so many people are effected. It's a chance to do something great.

What does it really matter lol? as soon as someone asks u what u 'do for a living' and u say 'computer....' they usually either have a preconcieved idea of a geek or dont have any kinda clue what ur job entails and switch off pretty quickly anyway lol, unless they are in the business themselves, in which case you can try impressing each other by giving urself a fancy title such as 'Software Director' or 'Technical Director' lol. Ive held all sorts of positions for many organisations and cringed when in my early 20's the new startup business printed my business cards with 'Software Manager' on - it fooled no-one it just looked like what it was, an attempt to big up a job to hopefully impress potential customers, and now at 47 even tho i run my own biz i just say i'm a 'Computer Programmer' if anyone asks, coz everyones heard of one of those, but more importantly if my m8's or family heard me trying to impress someone by saying im a 'company owner' or 'Director' i'd get the urine extracted for months lol, so although i waffle on, id go for 'programmer' every time, it's unpretentious & hides a multitude of sins
