Hello, i am working on a project, a rather big project at that. I have most of the necessary knowledge of OpenGL, C++, and mathematics that i need. What i am trying to do is build a game engine, something similar to the unreal 3 engine that will be the basis for my game. Now what i was wondering is if anyone knows of a similar engine as far as performance and features that is free to the public for commercial use, id like to not have to build my own unless i have to, but the quake engines are just not gonna cut it for what i want to do. Also, has anyone built an 3d game engine with all the subengines for physics, sound, etc....if so, what problems did you run into and what did you do to solve them

your request is a bit extreme.

To say that the quake engine wont cut it. you can always use an engine like quake 3, and then implement shader support.


If you want something that will do all the work for you, I doubt you will have the understanding to take full advantage of any engine.

Finding a free game engine that will compete with a commercial product is impossible. You can take a look at Irrlicht (mentioned in the post above) or OGRE but you won't get the same performance and features as Unreal.

Today, the high-quality products are most likely not free and you will have to invest in something that is supposed to become useful for you or your work. Especially when it comes to such software as game engines, you will have to look at commercial products if you intend to develop large-scale games.

I have the capabilities to build the engine myself, it being capable and efficient is not a problem. I was just trying to find say a "shortcut" so i could begin working on the game itself instead of the daunting task of building the engine. I am no fool, i know how much effort and time that it takes to build such an engine, and that is why i was looking for something, i also knew that it was highly unlikely to find one for free other than the outdated engines. But between spending the 8 thousand dollars for the newest unreal engine and building one myself. what would you do? especially since i lack the funds to purchase such an engine

If the above statement is true, then I would just build it myself. I don't understand why you would be in such a hurry to work on the game if you know that you have the ability to code the engine yourself, then you must be an experienced coder, & have done similar (or exact) work, in order to know what is required & what your limitations as a coder are.

If I knew I could code an engine, I wouldn't even bother wasting my time asking others what free engines that they prefer. Especially if you can code as good as, or better than (as you put it) an $8k game engine, I'd be selling my own.

But that's just me.

The reason is simply this. If i could find what i need without having to spend the next several years building it, why would i not try to due so. The price of the unreal engine whether its 8,000 or 300,000 is irrelevant in the situation, either way i cant afford it so why bring it up.

first off, i wasnt trying to be rude, if it came off that way i am sorry. second, what i meant by what would you do, i was simply asking, that between the two options that i have, wouldnt you at least try to find something that was free. I thought that it was highly improbable that i would find a free engine that advanced, but it was worth a try, would you not agree on that at the least?

@Core, OGRE is not a game engine; it is a rendering engine.

@Kleveland, Unreal 3 is HUGE, it is used in a lot of games, and it is expensive. As pro-FOSS as I am, I doubt you're going to find a pretty package (rendering, physics, sdk, etc) that will compete with it. My advice, if you're more interested in making games than in making engines, is to scout around and put together several different libraries to do what you want.

For example,
Some physics engines
OGRE, a rendering/graphics engine that has already been linked to several times.
FMOD, a commercial (but free) audio library.

... etc ...

I agree that some people have come off a little harsh in this thread, but you must understand that we get a lot of posts everyday asking for similar things (or worse, how to build a MMORPG in a day with no research or work).

I understand that, but i am not a complete noob. i am fluent in C++ and OpenGL. i also have a greater understanding of Algebra, Geometry, Calculus, and Trig. I have been a program hobbiest since 1999 when i got my first computer. I have done many smaller projects since then, but im finding myself wanting to do something a little more worth while. And anyone that thinks that they are gonna program something as massive as an MMO or an engine in a day or even a week need a serious wake up call

Who knows when I'll even finish my engine? And as for those MMORPG nooblets, I've got some designs for logging in and basic moderator functions. I should show how much incredible work it is just to make it so people can log in.
