The book says "Dive In". It's pretty sound advice.

Write a few of the given examples, watch them spin. See if you can make them do other things. When you're ready, write something that amuses you. Start small.

Honestly, that's how you learn any language. Learn a bit of syntax, do something with it, rinse, repeat. Eventually you gather enough info that you'll be able to do something for the fun of it.

Think Python: An intrduction software design.
I have found this book very useful. I think it can help newbies, even starting programs for the first time.

Well I am new to Python and I am reading "python for the absolute beginner" and its acutally pretty good. You could try that.

I suggest you "A Byte of Python" <<its even free in pdf's.
