Not really grasping the question. Although the file has a DAT extension, it could contain anything...it's entirely dependent on the program that created it. I could create a text file and rename it to DAT, it's still a text file. I could rename a ZIP file to DAT, it's still a ZIP file.

I successfully opened the file in Word Note Pad and have ascii characters to convert now. I also found a snippet on this site that should help me do this task. I have questions (now) on how to use the snippet (i am a beginner) but I think I can figure it out on a few attempts.

Don't quote yourself.

Where did the DAT file come from?
