playing with 3d

Posted 14 March 2009 - 09:21 AM

i just wanted to try blender for the first time in 9 years and put this little work in progress together.

i'm not done by any means, but i probably will just leave off here .

anyone a blender user ? i have some questions :

how do i separate the faces of a font so that i can put the face on color and the extrusion a seperate one?

and i'll have more if you answer that one.

if you have any comments besides that on the image feel free, i'll take that into note on the next project.

I am assuming that you are talking about doing something similar to this:
Attached Image

For that I went into the text editor (get there by clicking the window type button on the top or bottom of your window and select text editor)

Then I created a new text file (text -> new) and typed in:

Quote

Test
YayNess

With the new line.

After that you are ready to render the text so goto Edit -> Text to 3d Object -> One Object Per Line
That will allow you to modify each of the lines of text individually and you can change color, etc as you want.

<edit>
Now, you can't do this with text, but normally if you want to separate a portion of a mesh from the rest of the given mesh (in edit mode, tab to get there with a selected object) you select the face, vertex, or edge (or whatever) you to separate into a second mesh and press P, which opens up the separation menu, as you already have everything selected that you want to separate simply click the selected option and it will be done. Everything you have selected will be removed from the current mesh and placed into a second mesh.

As for your image above, that looks pretty good, the biggest issue I have with it is that the edges of the text appear to be a little pixelated, but that is nothing major and I am pretty sure that people can live with it.
</edit>

@betawar -- thanks, not exactly what i was looking for though. will be useful on something else though.

so... in reference to your edit. i can't just pull the face off the "tyler" so just the front part wlil be selected?

(i'm attempting to play with text to do something way above my head like this :

check out 'the mars volta' the 2nd piece of text from the bottom left.--how the white face is different from the orange extrude.

and also -- that pic looks 100% (or very near) 3d program correct? very little photoshopping going on there.

nice pickup on the jagged edges too. i exported it incorrectly and felt i could cover my mistake by shrinking it. :)
