The best FREE ide for Java SE and EE Development is Netbeans. Eclipse is secondary. Netbeans has a nicer gui builder, but you really can't go wrong with either. As far as the commercial ones, I doubt I'd ever pay for one.

GUI Builders should never be used in java.

Are you really pbl in disguise? :)

Did someone say vi?

vi. Worth learning, but if you're also learning Java, it's like trying to learn two languages at once. I had to do that for C in a college class...and it sucked.

vi's not that hard to learn - the basics, you can learn in an afternoon. The most advanced features, you'll learn as you need them. The hardest thing is getting used to working in a modal editor, but it's so much easier than having to reach for the mouse every time you want to do something other than enter text, and so much easier on the hands than all the ctrl-meta stuff in EMACS.

Sure, let's go through the holy war one more time for auld lang syne!

Sounds good, but before we do that let me just throw in: "Ban Vi, and only criminals will have Vi!"

That's right! And shell commands don't kill processes, users kill processes.

I started out with Eclipse then later on switched to IntelliJ and have never looked back.
