Security Clearance

Posted 22 March 2009 - 08:31 PM

I'm being looked at for a job as a contractor. I've never done this type of thing before and don't know much about the process of going through the motions of obtaining the security clearance I need for it. I do know that the company that hires me will pay for it and it will take like 6 months and they do an in depth background search.

What would prevent someone from getting a clearance? If anyone can give me some information or let me know what to expect, I'd appreciate it.

I've looked on a few forums and they say be honest on their forms because they look at integrity as a high quality, even if you do have some bad marks...

Too many of them & you may be considered as reckless.

you'll fill out an SF86 that will ask all the opening rounds of questions, it pretty much covers what KYA listed. Just don't lie on it. They'll use that when interviewing people and if anything doesn't match up that's when they start to dig deeper. They definitely don't want someone who will lie on that thing, but they realize everyone has their little indiscretions throughout their lives. Just tell the truth, and don't sweat it. (also, six months would be pretty fast, if it doesn't come in by then, don't sweat that either, OPM just gets swamped with this stuff, mine took a year)

I would also add that if you DO have something that might preclude you from getting a clearance (i.e. heavy recent drug usage, bankruptcy, criminal background, etc.) Just skip this job as once you fail a clearance, you're branded for life and have to always answer "Yes, I was turned down for a clearance before".
