any recommended languages to learn?

Posted 24 March 2009 - 01:21 PM

I want to learn a programing language to be used in web apps, and was thinking PHP would be good. Any other recommended ones?

I want to make sure it is a good choice before committing myself to any single one.

Thanks!

i would say php would be the best choice to learn if you want to do web apps. Learn to interact PHP with MySQL and that should be a great start.

Depends much what you want to code. If you want to do web apps then PHP + MySQL is the thing.

Thank you very much. I think I'll go with PHP. Anyone recommend a book for learning it? I know HTML and CSS and am learning actionscript, so I do have some code exposure.

So just out of curiosity, what are the limits of PHP?

Clojure. Clojure will expand your thinking. It's also a very fun and simple language, yet very powerful and practical.

You can first start with w3school tutorials.
Then you can collect Beginning PHP 5 by Wrox Publications.

LMAO, I love how no one has recommended ASP. That's because it sucks. :)

PHP FTW!

ASP yes, ASP.NET != suck

ASP.NET would be a good one to learn as well (with C#). Large sites are beginning to use it as well, like NewEgg.Com is built on the .Net Framework

I've lately become a big fan of Python for my apps - using a framework like Django makes getting up and running pretty fast, and the language seems to lend itself a little better to the way I think than PHP ever did.
