I just finished Elfen Lied a couple days ago and really enjoyed it. For me, it was one of those shows where I was really disappointed that it was over...I started watching high school of the dead and its seems good so far, I think I'm 4 episodes in. So I'll probably finish that in the next couple weeks. I still wish elfen lied wasn't over though... :'(

High School of Dead has only 12 episodes. Bastards ended it just when it got awesome. :( I really wanted to see more of that crazy teacher dude.

LOL, Elfen Lied! There are a number of anime where I really can't imagine the intended target audience. Elfen Lied is either at or near the top of this list. It is my usual example of unclassifiable anime.

Opening episodes, big gory hyper violence, arterial sprays, the works. Then, mostly light harem stuff for the rest of the series. Wait, what? Ending in more good gory fun, with the usual anime helpings of psycho babble and WTF.

Best of all, the apparent moral of the story? It's ok to be a homicidal maniac as long as you're cute.

To quote Mike Ness (from Social Distortion) - "it's the story of my life".

I haven't watched too many animes but most of them that I have watched always had some stuff that didn't make sense or was just plain weird. i intentionally try not look into things too deeply. theres no doubt there are plenty of questionable things in elfen lied

Well, you're dealing two alien worlds in anime. One is Japanese culture, which is distinctly different and foreign to anyone not Japanese. The other is anime itself, which is its own strange little fishbowl. Anime has a number of conventions, short cuts, and internal references that have accumulated over the years. Some of these are influenced by culture, but some belong only to the genre itself.

The more anime you see, the more you'll see common bits and pieces throughout. Look deeply, it's much more fun that way.

Elfen Lied is mostly style, light on the substance. I even forget most of the stuff that happened on that one. I still remember the girl on girl action though. Anyways...

My favorite anime are:

Monster - one of the best. Naoki Urosawa is awesome. Basically a suspense novel come to life. I wonder why they haven't turned this into a series yet. If I had to pick a network that would make this, it's Showtime.

Eureka Seven - quite possible the best shonen anime out there. In the span of 50 episodes manages not to be boring and each episode offers something new. Oh, and if you played Xenogears you might think of this as Xenogears as an anime. Did I mention that I hate anime with gundams/robots, and this managed to be one of my favorite anime?

Honey and Clover - quite possibly the only romantic anime I watched. Mature and funny at the same time, this one's real good.

Requiem of Darkness - an obscure title.

FLCL - craziness in 6 awesome episodes. I especially like how they blend the music with the anime.

Denno Coil - an obscure title, shame. This is one of the best I've seen, this is a sci - fi title drawn like a Studio Ghibli work and the story is reaaaal good. Oh, and the sci - fi tech here is awesome.

Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni - this one's pretty depressing and head scratching at the start, this is a psychological thriller that's pretty disturbing. I guess.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - this one's great for a reason. If you don't know anything about this, I won't spoil it for you. Great concept and executed brilliantly.

Hmmm, I know I have a few more but it's this for the meantime.

Claymore's awesome. Too bad they dropped the anime though.

I am okay with that, while I love Bleach - 360+ episodes is extreme overkill.

I stopped watching Bleach around 200+. It had been sliding down hill for a while at that point. But, hell, if it kept only going that long it might have redeemed itself.

Claymore... Guilty pleasure anime, I think. Monster of the week and chicks in chain mail. Still, was fun.

They should have stopped Bleach at episode 50. I've probably posted this here, I remember, but here's Bleach in a gist:

1. Powerful group of enemies arrive and wreak havoc either to Earth or Soul Society.
2. Ichigo has early encounter with main group leader. Ichigo loses.
3. Ichigo goes to training.
4. Ichigo and friends try to stop them in one on one battles.
5. Ichigo battles main baddy, wins.
6. Go to step 1 again.

Seriously. And the filler arc? The same. I'd rather stick with short anime and manga that in less than 50 chapters or 10 episodes have much more substance than the whole Bleach franchise, manga and anime combined. Granted, Bleach is shonen stuff, but still, it's very formulaic.

Anyway, can we discuss manga here too? I find I finish more with reading manga than watching anime. For example, I've managed to finish the whole Fairy Tail thing in less than a week. I can't imagine doing the same for the anime though.
