I know the language i'm a brilliant CSS coder if I have a design in front of me but if I have to come up with one I can then go to create it and it turns out bad like the ones where you see bright orange as the background with yellow text bad.
And my designs that I have done on the web have all been converted to template designs. Just because I want someone to visit my site that isn't someone looking for the worst site design.
Actually found one My Site

Just make friends with artsy people and problem solved. If you are routinely creating things that are colored 'hot dog stand' themed - then I am not sure if there is any help.

sam your in a better spot than most.
i remember back in my glory days when i did my designs and i thought they were awesome and didn't see the difference between good design and bad.
if you recognize it it will come to you .
i consider myself to have a great eye for design, but am a hack designer -- i haven't been able to create what i want all the time yet -- but i'm getting better. it will grow on you.

Pay someone else to do it for you. Meanwhile you do some coding for some other people and charge them ten times what you pay the artist. That's simple economics.
Better pay some unemployed guy $100 to an 8hr job if you can make $200 in the same 8hrs, instead of doing it yourself as both you and the unemployed guy will lose $100 each in the process. Unless of course the job is something you enjoy doing or the unemployed guy is a crackhead.

Yea start designing sites based on other sites and modifying them slightly when you get comfortable, its a slow process but you get in the hang of it after a while some quicker than others.

I'll agree, and don't try and do too much at once either. It's easire to fix and it does wonders for your confidence

100 * 10 != 200.

As said, it just takes a ton of practice, I had a time where things totally sucked, here one of examples out there on the web still:
