I am currently doing IT at my univserity as well. As for programming we have to take two Java courses, but they don't go too in depth with it. My program is more focused on business relations and how to manage data through SQL and other database languages. Those are the key concepts to the program. But I do believe that the IT field does prepare you for a career in programming as well, since computers are such a broad field, anything is possible. Our math courses are all based on logic and that is the first step to becoming a programmer
