1-2-3-A-B-C++ > Argh References and Pointers

Having a real hard time understanding the usefulness of references and pointers. They have something to do with scope and being able to change values outside of scope? I'm re-reading chapters 6 and 7 and I've been supplementing with the tutorials at cplusplus.com and some youtube videos.

Anyone have any suggestions?
