I have recently finished reading Code, by Charles Petzold, a fascinating book which works you through the arbitration of real world objects into abstract values, through semaphore and morse code, then before you know it you are working through transistor logic, ram, astable flip-flops, and even the rudiments of Assembly language. If you don;t want something dry and academic, I highly reccomend this book.

Ivor Horton's book deals with MFC ( microsoft foundation class ) projects. To make these I had to get VS 2010 professional version. This is available for free from the dreamsparks website, for educational use.
VC++2010 Express is more than adequate for quite a lot of other pieces of educational literature, such as Beginning C++ through game programming, which I am also working through at the moment.
Ivor Horton's Begginning Visual C++ 2010, for me, has so far been an ecellent and detailed read, I have picked up a lot of the basics having worked through the first few chapters of the book, and reccomend it for those with the time and aptitude to keep up with the technical pitch of the writing style.
I hope this helps
