Posted 25 Jan 2013In my opinion Java has always been a good place to start. Java is strict and Object Oriented.
If a student who is starting to learn Java and gets confused and decides to try another language, not only is tha "normal" but should be deemed as a good thing.
C++ is a good language to go to next because it is very similar to Java.
I would also recommend you consider learning Python too.
I have never studied Lisp so I have no opinion about it.
Posted 18 Aug 2012Generally speaking, if you are intelligent enough to ask that question, I say specialize when you are young and generalize as you get older.
Everyone in your professional life appreciates someone who can demonstrate focus. Once you establish yourself as someone who can master a skill at a high level than then you have more flexibility to explore the bigger picture.
As you get older, it it becomes increasingly difficult to ignore the big picture in the real world.
