Promoting this to the Advanced Discussion Sections, as it may lead to some good stuff.

One approach to consider is return a custom object that encapsulates the validity of the result. I used this approached for TTF.

Oooh! Aaaa! My first ever forum question, after just a few weeks of learning .NET, and I get moved to the advanced discussions. Should I be flattered or very, very afraid?

I think the work-around I briefly described above may be exactly as you suggest, but I am still learning the terminology, so I am not sure. It's the sort of klunky thing I am trying very hard to avoid with .NET. Try/Catch/Throw are such an elegant way of managing user errors that it hurts to not be able to use it.

The bottom line is: Have a I hit an intrinsic problem/limitation in VB.NET, or have I simply done something silly?

Greetings! Might I suggest C# before you get any further into VB for your .Net endeavors?

Thank you for that. Yes, another learning curve would be really helpful.
