In Topic: Your Nerderrific Idols

I've always had a lot of respect for Kevin Mitnick, he's a really nice guy in person, VERY intelligent.
Although an idol is someone to look up to and aspire to follow so I guess Kevin Mitnick is probably not a good choice. Maybe Mark Cuban? He plays a cocky, crazy billionaire in public but I was able to meet him and talk to him for an hour or so a couple years ago and again, very nice guy, humble, just like anyone else.
I've never met Robert Scoble but he seems like a pretty cool guy, does a lot of different things in the tech community. I've always been a Leo Laporte fan ever since the early Tech TV days (and ZDTV before that) and now with TWiT, I don't know if he would be an idol but he's fun to listen to I guess. -

I'm still trying to wrap my head around Acer buying eMachines. It's like the brand that refuses to die regardless of how many bankruptcies it's been through. -

The hard drive in my 7 month old MBP died (yeah, 7 months.. BS.) and instead of sending it off to the Apple mothership for warranty repair I decided to pick up an 80GB Intel SSD - Agreed big difference in performance, well worth the investment. -

Hey kids, I’ve been working on a little project in my (limited) free time lately, thought I’d share. I bought a telco rack in good condition super cheap off a guy on craigslist, scored a spare 3com 3300 from work and put all of my gear into the guest room closet so it’s all tucked away (except for the light humming noise coming from an otherwise ordinary looking bedroom closet I suppose) – I eliminated a lot of wireless stuff and ran ethernet throughout the apartment as even 5Ghz N can be a little hit or miss in a large complex full of wireless networks like where I’m at, so I have ethernet runs for the WDTV’s, 360, Blu-ray, printer etc.

From top to bottom: Dell LCD, “NTGR” Netgear WNDR 3700 dual band N router with GigE, Motorola cable modem, Linksys VoIP ATA, “STR-MS” Netgear Stora NAS with 4TB storage currently running JBOD, 24-port Cat6 patch panel, 3Com Superstack 3300XM 24-port managed switch, Netgear 5-port GigE switch, spare 24-port unmanaged switch, “DLL-BT” Dell torrent box running Ubuntu 11.04 on the right, “DLL-FS” Dell box on the left that I think I’m going to turn into a small file server or play with some VPN stuff on, currently has 2TB of storage running Server 2003 although I may load up Slackware or another distro as I get off on the idea of having a Windows free network at home.
We dropped cable TV last year and have been streaming downloaded stuff from a couple WDTV Live+ HD boxes in our living room and bedroom so the torrent box downloads/seeds constantly and the Stora NAS is used exclusively for streaming media now. I had bought a nice little rack mountable IBM 1U eServer from a local computer shop but the thing is so loud and puts off so much heat that I decided to use it for something at work instead. I did end up mounting a small desk fan at the top of the rack to keep air moving around in the closet, it works.
