Decisions, decisions...which Linux to go with.

Finally made the decision to go from duel booting Vista and Kubuntu to a complete change over to Linux. Have used Linux many times in the past and love it...but can't make up my mind which one to go with.

I have used Ubuntu/Kubuntu more than any in the past but here recently I have been checking out other Distro's out of curiosity. Everything from Mandriva 2010, Knoppix 6.3, Vector, Linux Mint, OpenSUSE 11.2 and PCLinux OS. Really like them all but so far the one that has really blown my mind is Knoppix. I loaded the live CD to check it out and was amazed at everything that was readily available. Everything from Compiz to Wine was preloaded and running with the Live CD.

I have always stuck with Ubuntu/Kubuntu because of it ease of use and being based of Debian. After doing some research on Knoppix I see it is based off of Debian as well. My main goal with picking a Distro is to make sure that I can continue with my new found interest in programming. Knoppix seems like it would be the best way to go so far, but I also like the development schedule that Ubuntu has where there is a updated version of the OS approx every 6 months. I also love multimedia in general and Linux Mint seems like it is the right choice for this. I know any Linux Distro can be customized the way I want it, but being able to pick a distro and stick with it is my problem. So far I love them all but can't find the one I want to call "MY DISTRO."

Anyone who reads this, if you have any suggestions or input then please leave a comment for me. I will reply as soon as possible.

I just started using Linux about 2 weeks ago. I'm dual booting w/ XP loaded first (some school applications only work on Windows, and I haven't gotten around to using virtualbox since wine doesn't cut it) -- I've been using openSuSE and really like it.

I didn't want something too hardcore as my first distro, but at the same time I didn't want something geared completely towards the non-tech Windows user. I may end up getting some live CD's later to try other distros, but have been a big fan so far. It's autodetected all my hardware so far with no issues, updates have been painless, and there seems to be a lot of support online for issues.

Keep us updated on what you choose and why! You might end up convincing me on a new flavor!

Will do elgose. So far I have it narrowed down to either Ubuntu/Kubuntu or Knoppix. Really impressed with Knoppix 6.3  Kind of waiting for Ubuntu 10.04 to be released, only 9 days left, so I can try that one out. Once I do that I think it will be easier for me to make up my mind.

Glade to hear the transition has went well for you so far. I will probably be dual booting for a short time as well. The training I do at work requires Windows...but once that is done, then it will be full blown Linux.

Keep me updated on how the switch has been going for you
