So Skype does not seem to work either. This is rather unfortunate. But, I am currently setting up windows XP virtual PC, So hopefully that will get some results.
Other things I've tried:
Linux in a Virtualbox --> Fail
Compatibility mode --> Fail
Installing Linux --> Fail (bought the wrong type of CD Roms...)
Sweet Talkin --> Epic Fail
I'll let you all know how it goes!

I think your method of getting it to work is wrong because I've got Skype on Windows 7 working, Linux on VirtualBox working and installed Linux without any bother. I just installed all my necessary drivers and off I went with Skype.
