Linux vs Mac vs Windows

Icon 6 Comments
For quite a while I’ve noticed articles, videos and forum topics having a title something like “Linux vs Mac vs Windows”. Frankly these sicken me. There is no such thing as the OS is better than that because they’re made for different reasons. Mac – multimedia, Windows – Mainly office and gaming and Linux - Programming and other generalized “geek stuff”. Sure Linux and Windows can do some multimedia, Windows and Mac can do some programming and Mac and Linux can to some office and gaming, but these OSes were made for different reasons.

Currently, Linux is invading the home user and more and more people are using it. But some people take it personally when someone says “This is better than yours” and end up getting into an argument that won’t go anywhere.

Or Open-source vs Proprietary is another popular one, but the thing with that is open-source will eventually take over. Fact. It may not be today, or tomorrow or in ten years but if you think about it for 10 minutes, open-source software is getting more advanced (e.g FireFox, GIMP or OpenOffice) and more popular.

But back to the point: It’s very hard to get a accurate comparison because though they all have shared features, they’re all made for different reasons and purposes.

Thanks for reading! ^_^

I would be careful about making the distinction of what an OS is 'made for' - while Linux is used a lot in servers, it's also in use for desktops. Also, I am sure that many Rails developers would take offense at your statement that Macs are for multimedia - they're developers too, you know. :)

Yes, but I'm talking very generally and Macs are more known for photo/video/music editing instead of programming. But I understand what you mean and to all the Rails developers reading this, I'm sorry. -_-

I agree, the last one of these threads I replied in, my last sentence about Linux and Windows was...

... but I use both, neeeeeeeeeeeee-!

The only reason why I don't have a mac is because their overpriced. I checked the specs on the MacBook that's running for 949 (999 without the puny student discount) and it matches my laptop- almost exactly in every way except my laptop has Linux and Windows on it at the same time. My laptop was 800~840 and I got a rebate on it.

They were running a contest for a free MacBook and if I win I'm actually giving it to my sister since she is in dire need of a laptop with those specs, size, and weight.

The forum should have a rule against holy wars. They are just absolutely terrible topics that go nowhere.

Ahahaha! B) I think the main reason why open source didn't take over already, is because of the 'user friendly' side. Take windows for an example. Many many users still look for relatively simple OS to use. If you're working, but you're not really into computers, well, linux might be a little strange :) (OK it depends on the extension)

Cheers :)

Well Linux is user friendly, but unlike Windows, its not idiot friendly.
