A Linux Journey Part I

Icon 5 Comments
I've been meaning to try out Ubuntu/other flavors of Linux for quite some time now, but I just never got around to it. As luck would have it, I was out today and picked up old computer/monitor combo for 5 bucks!

I was so pleased with my good fortune, I decided that spending a little more money would be perfectly acceptable, not to mention fun. Then it hit me! Blog about it! A journey of starting with a (literally) piece of crap and turning it into a functional *nix workstation.

I inspected the unit before I purchased and noticed that there was no HDD. Good! I won't be tempted to use Windows 98 or whatever I'm sure was on here a while back. I have a clean slate here and I'm sure not going to let it go to waste. I spent the better part of the last hour cleaning the case out of dust and such and decided to disconnect one (out of 3 for some reason) CD drives and the floppy drive. It's one of those old fashioned cases where everything needs a screwdriver to be installed--ugh! I've burnt the Ubuntu desktop CD and am now on my way to the store to pick up a few cheap items: a HDD, mouse, and keyboard.

Pics coming soon! Stay tuned for this journey which I'm sure will be of epic proportions.

EDIT: Foiled! The nearby store had nothing I needed. Off to the internet! (read: Newegg/TigerDirect).

I recently installed Ubuntu (about 2 months ago) and I love it. There are a few occasional hiccups, getting my USB WiFi device working with Windows drivers, graphics card driver issues, but overall it's a very nice experience. I currently have two partitions on my old (2002) 120GB HDD, 80GB Windows (I had already used ~75 so I allowed for 5GB expansion) and the rest Ubuntu/Kubuntu. If that old computer you picked up could handle it (I doubt it from your description) I'd install the KDE desktop as well as the default GNOME, it does crash a little more than I'd like it to, but the UI is much nicer.

Anyway, I'm rambling.
Good Luck!

You might want to watch out for the memory requirements on the default ubuntu. It is often a bit more than they can handle. Smaller distribution like Xubuntu should probably work though.

Yup, I was taking a look at that. I'll probably get more memory once I boot the damn thing. Why this person had 3 CD/DVD drives is beyond me.

First one is a (regular?) CD ROM drive (circa, who the hell knows? )
Second one is a DVD (I get that)
and the last one is a CD ROM Writable drive.

So why did they keep the first one still in there?
