The $500 computer

Icon 6 Comments
Immediate Disclaimer: This total assumes you already have an OS, be it free or not. Having that said:

My family was in desperate need of an upgrade. They were using a 2003 Compaq Presario (I'll give you a moment to get off the floor or pick up your jaw depending on your choice of euphemism) POS (this actually stands for point of sale, but I prefer piece of shit).

Requirements? They just wanted something that ran "faster". None of them program or anything of that nature, but my brother does like to game so that raised the requirements a bit.

To recap: faster and games please [the old computer had a Geforce 5200 FX, yeah... I'm serious).

Here's what I assembled:

Motherboard - $54.99
Processor - $60.99
Hard drive - $69.99
Memory - $77.99
Power Supply - $59.99
DVD Drive - $31.99
Graphics Card - $95.99
Case - $39.99

Total: $491.92

If you just want a name list instead of links:

ASRock A780LM Mobo
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200 2.7Ghz
Western Digital 750 GB HDD
G.Skill 4GB (2x 2GB) DDR2 1066 Memory
Rosewill 600W PSU
Sony Optiarc 24X DVD/CD RW Drive
XFX Geforce 9800 GT
APEX TM 302-3 MicroATX MidTower Case

I ended up picking up a copy of Vista for them (with a free 7 upgrade) so that added another ~100 bucks to the total, but hardware wise it is a $500 computer.

Performance? Awesome.

Wanted to point out the power supply link is incorrect its the same as the Hard Drive link. Also, wanted to ask a question? Given that its 4 gigs of memory, presumably the processor and OS working together can address all that memory space right?

Fixed, thanks for pointing that out.

And yup the memory issue was addressed (pun intended :) ) prior to the build.

Thanks for the info! I just started looking for an inexpensive desktop, but maybe now I'll build one.

WIN.

Yep, maybe now I'll think a little more heavily on building my own desktop. (once I have the green, of course ;))

That's pretty sweet. I want to do that to my old computer, but I don't have that kind of money. I will have to save up :(
