Epic Fail

If you're going to do something, you might as well do it right - the first time. Below is an email I received earlier today and is a prime example of not following this rule:

The prestigious YAHOO! has set out and successfully organized a Sweepstakes marking the End of year 2009 anniversary we rolled out over
£1,000,000.00 (One Million Great British Pounds) for our end of year Anniversary Draws. Participants for the draws were randomly selected and
drawn from a wide range of web hosts which we enjoy their patronage. Please note that this Promotional Programmes tagged "Thanks for contributing to our financial Success" was sponsored and organized by the Yahoo Corporation in view of the Financial benefits YAHOO have recieved from its numerous customers either through adverts, hosting and personal emails.

Pro-tips for spammers:

  • Make sure you use proper English.
  • Don't randomly capitalize words in the middle of a sentence.
  • Don't send out the email weeks after you already drew the winner
  • Spell words correctly
  • A YAHOO! contest team member who doesn't have a [at]yahoo address?
  • Internet Explorer is a terrible program, do not praise it

Don't threaten your mark. This is a scam, not a stick up.

When pretending to be part of a company don't sound like an external source.
At least try to tie the different reasons for your scam together. What does an Internet Explorer promotion, an e-mail beta, and the lottery have to do with each other?

I got a good one of these not to long ago. Apparently I had family in Africa (as far as I know the past four generations have lived in the U.S., and before that Ireland) And they died and left me $100,000. And you think the English was bad in this one, oh man. You figure sometimes that the people who fall for this might just deserve it.

Common guys havent you ever heard "Trust, without it you will get no free candy?"

It amazes me that they still bother spamming emails like this out. 99% of them get caught by spam guards and of that 1%, 99% of them sit and laugh at it like we are. I know its easy, click the computer button and spam away, wait and magically get money from 1 dumb hick somewhere, but seriously.

Personally I am always a fan of the numerous Nigerian Princes who take me in consideration to hold their wealth for them
