Steam's holiday sale was, in a word, awesome, and given the "cheap" price of a few titles, I picked up some ones I would normally gloss over simply because they weren't on my radar or I didn't feel like shelling out 20 bucks for an "indie" title.
Without further ado [the sale goes until 9 AM PST tomorrow 1/4/10], I highly recommend the following:
Defense Grid: The Awakening
The best tower defense game I have ever played. It brought back some Starcraft memories (remember the TD maps? I do). Aliens try to get your power cores and you have to stop them...with towers.
Braid
Critically acclaimed, but I just never bothered to look into it. For $2.49, you can't go wrong. Time effects alter the platforming aspect. Weird story.
Torchlight
For some reason I never played either Diablo game, but the consensus is that this game is similar. Dungeon crawler/hack and slash. Currently single player, but supposedly a MMO is in the pipeline. Killing stuff and getting "phat lewtz" is a lot of fun.
World of Goo
It's a physics puzzle game, if that makes any sense. Quite addictive, your goal is to make a "bridge" with your goo pieces to cross various maps.
Trine
I didn't know what to expect from this one (and I snagged it when it was $4.99 yesterday; certainly worth $7.99 though), but it is sort of a 3D Braid. You control one of three characters who have various abilities: object creation, swinging, outright combat, so on and so forth. Real physics makes this quite a fun distraction.
While any of these titles is worth it's regular or semi discounted price, it's currently highway robbery. Try some hidden gems.

World of Goo it's a beautiful game with good physics but I got bored with 20~30 minutes of gameplay.
Torchlight looks like Diablo in a cartoon style. Gameplay is good, but a little repetitive. Who play Diablo will find familiarities in this game, like potions, scrolls, etc.
Torchlight is light, have even a netbook mode. My PC isn't powerful, but Torchlight runs with maximum graphics without affect the performance. But the loading time, even with the lowest graphics, takes ages (maybe it's my PC).

I've been playing Torchlight since it came out. It's visual eye candy, and also fun and refreshing to play.
Thanks for the heads up on those other Indie titles. I grabbed Braid and Defense Grid.
I'd also recommend Shattered Horizon, from FutureMark 3d, zero gravity space FPS. It's a bit lacking in content as of right now, but this could be the beginning of a new genre.

I'm probably going to go buy Defense Grid: The Awakening, sounds cool.
Also an oldie (at this point) but goodie as well. AudioSurf, great game where you get ride you music along a track collecting blocks to make combos, the tracks are all generated based off the music. Its currently $2.50 down from the usual $10.

I would have, but I'm still using XP.
Ouch... Any particular reason you're hanging on to XP? Win7 is by far Microshaft's best OS so far, and if you have a .edu email address you can get Win7 Pro for 30 bucks (I think the deal expires within the next couple of weeks though.)
