The Switch to Windows 7 - Day 5 (The Conclusion)

Icon 3 Comments
Well this is now day 5 running the new Windows 7 OS, and this will probably be my last entry regarding the switch. I have to say that I am completely pleased with Microsoft’s new Operating System. It gives me the looks of Vista that I liked so much, while not requiring a “super computer” in order to run it properly. The glitches I have run into are few, and were normally fixed by applying the latest service pack for Visual Studio 2005, SQL Server 2005 and the latest Vista drivers for my NVIDIA graphics card.

I am pleased with the performance of Windows 7; it’s been running like a finely tuned machine since I installed it. I installed my wife’s copy of Sims III for a second test of the graphics ability of the new OS, and I must say that I am rather pleased. The shadows and lighting were spot on, and everything turned as high as it could get got me no lag whatsoever (just like with DOOM III), so it appears to be better than Vista when it comes to this aspect as well.

I have yet to have problems installing my software, unlike Vista (some were just a pain in the @ss to install and get to run), and the newer Microsoft tools (Visual Studio 2008, SQL 2008, etc) seem to run better than on either Windows XP or Windows Vista. My final conclusion is that Windows 7 was worth the wait. Is it a perfect OS, no (it has it’s glitches like any new OS) but the ones I encountered were too trivial to even mention. It may not be perfect, but its closer right off the shelf than any other OS I can remember from Microsoft, and it’s worth it to make the leap to the new OS.

Thanks for your assessment of Windows 7. I've generally been satisfied with my Vista machine, which was built with Vista in mind so doesn't have a lot of the performance issues that those who upgraded from XP have experienced. However, I find myself (for the first time) seriously thinking about purchasing the upgrade to Windows when the new version becomes available. The early reviews of Windows 7 are just that good. To read the actual experience of a user/developer switching to Windows 7 has been helpful in solidifying my feeling that the upgrade may be worth it.

Now if I can just scrape the money together in the next few months...

Psycho, did you check out the alternate styles of the Win 7 taskbar?? If you don't have a lot of applications pinned, I suggest you check it out :)
