Homebuilt Computer Lists

Posted 28 April 2009 - 04:50 PM

I've been researching motherboards, processors,GPUs and the like and i have taken an interest in searching for parts and putting together lists of builds that I would consider interesting or good for gaming. I've also been contemplating building a website to aid others in their builds by offering examples and resources for different types of systems..ranging from the cheap build ($500 or so) to the extreme enthusiast ($4000+ and watercooling) I have two builds done so far, One is an Intel based on the Core i7, and the other is AMD based on the Phenom II X4. Let me know what you think. Please give constructive criticism...just saying "Dude, that sucks" isnt helpful lol. If you dont agree with something, please tell me why, and possible suggestions for replacement. Thank you.

oh and if this isnt the right place for this kind of post, i apologize for the inconvenience and please move...Thank you

INTEL SYSTEM
(4.1% of budget) Case: CoolerMaster COSMOS $159.99
(8.4% of budget) PSU: 1200W ThermalTake Toughpower $329.00
(25.6% of budget) Processor: Core i7 Extreme 965 $999.99

(3.6% of budget) Sound Card: X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Pro. 139.99

SYSTEM TOTAL : $3,908.89 before rebates from newegg.

AMD SYSTEM

(11.8% of budget) Processor:Phenom II X4 Black Edition 3.2Ghz $245.99
(2.2% of budget) CPU Cooler: Scythe 120mm $44.99
(8.1% of budget) Mobo:Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-UD5P $169.00
(5.7% of budget) Memory: G.Skill 4gb (2x2gb) DDR2 1066 (x2) $58.99 ea
(19.2% of budget)GPU:Radeon HD 4870 256-bit GDDR5 (x2) $199.99 ea.

So these are the first two i've done online, I have built two systems before for myself but i dont have write ups done for them..so let me know what you think.

do you really want to spend that much money on a computer???

Intel System
CPU
the core i7 isnt worth that much money!!!
i would wait if you want an i7
excluding core i7:
best cpu's for gaming are Core 2 Duo's
best cpu's for computing (all the math's stuff like compiling, rendering, etc.)

Mobo
what do you need a SLI board for???
are you going to buy another graphics card to connect them together???
by the way... you wont gain that much more Graphicspower with 2 Cards

PSU
Do you need that much power?
you know that well be a expensive electricity bill :P
sum up all the electricity your computer needs and add about 100 to 200 Watt extra for later purposes.
more you DONT need!

Memory
dont get the most expensive memory, it doesnt mean they're the best
actually you get quite good away with cheaper memory
i've got 4gb Kingston HyperX (DDR2) ram and im quite happy with them, werent that expensive as you listed above

HDD
Why the hell do you need 2 TerraByte?
if you only programm, game and surf on it + storred a bit of music and films, you never ever even get to 1 TB
i would recommend 1 TB, though

Soundcard
have you got a really good soundsystem that you can hook up to such a mighty soundcard?
if not.... its not worth it
but if you have enough money and a really cool soundsystem i would buy it.... i already got it and, WOOOW.... its an amazing quality for a computer

CPU Cooler
Do you want to overclock your CPU / Computer??
otherwise its not worth it such a big cooler

GPU
One is fairly enough.
its not worth the money to buy 2 of them.
i've got the GTX-280 in my computer and with all settings on high + highest resolution, i had 700 FPS in Counterstrike Source!!!!
do you know how much an avarage eye can really see??
about 70 FPS
everything above just feels faster

Case
nothing to say
for me it just has to be a case and not a ultra high end gaming case with 7 inch cooler in top and all over the place blue neon lights.

Cant say anything about AMD, just dont know enought

i payed for my computer about 1800 Swiss Franks (~ $1500) and im happy with it

look through different tests and see whats worth the money and whats good and whats not so good about the different components of the computer
tom's hardware is quite a good place to look through

hope i could help

The intel system is an example of a high end gaming system. As for the AMD system, its more along the lines of what I consider a mid-range system. When i built my current system i believe i spent around $2200-$2500 and i feel comfortable with that because i got a lot of quality parts. Thanks for the input though

i agree with everything toxic said. 1000 dollars on a cpu. theres no way that cpu is 600 dollars worth faster than a real nice 300 dollar quad. seems kinda like this system is quite the money burner here. dont go overboard for the sake of going overboard. if u have leftover money, then spend it on software or something

there is a new zealand magazine called PC USER and it comes with a disc that has software on it to make a pc with a budget from $500(NZD) to $3000(NZD).
if you are looking for a good gaming system, there was a nice one i came across last year called the Enspire light speed 780i it was one of the nicest pc's ive ever seen costing around $4000(AUD).

heres my recommendations

CPU
Core i7 extreme overclocked to 4GHz

Motherboard
Asus Rampage 2

RAM
2X Kingston HyperX 2GB DDR3-1600 RAM kit

so on and so forth, gotta go end of class

amd ftl. thats what i say about the amd system. theres no reason to have to spend more than ~1500 dollars on a high end pc. you will just be wasting money on stuff that wont be any faster or better.

Here's my current build, which I originally built two years ago; works nice for gaming and has been very stable w/o overclocking

Gigabyte GA-M59SLI-N5 mobo
AMD Athlon 64 x2 5200 processor
6 GB Corsair XMS dual-channel PC800 RAM
2 x 250 GB SATA Western Digital Hard Drives in RAID 0 (?) configuration (2 drives making 1 virtual drive)
ASUS 512 MB GDDR3 GEForce Video Card 8600XT or GT
500 Watt Antec power supply
Thermaltake Full Tower Tsunami Dream chassis
Pioneer DVD superdrive
G9 mouse
G11 Keyboard
On Vista 64 Ultimate

Total cost when I built it was @$2100 USD

Just recently upgraded processor from 3800 to 5200, RAM from 2 GB to 6 GB, and upgraded video card from EVGA 7950 to current card.

Was pretty stable but wasn't all that great until I upgraded and was forced to flash my BIOS; now it is a solid setup.

When I built it, Vista had just been released, so it was fairly buggy and drivers were lacking. I believe I got rid of my biggest problem which was the video card, and upgrading the RAM done wonders for gaming.

Attached is a screen shot of my reliability monitor. The number 9.42 is out of a possible 10. Attached Image
