Mandrake Linux 10.2 Installation

Post icon  Posted 04 February 2005 - 12:30 PM

Hey,
I want to Install Mandrake Linux 10.2 on my PC.
I already have Windows XP Installed on my PC.

How can I install Mandrake such that there is a OS Selection option at Startup?

How much minimum space do I require to Install Linux?
Can I Install Mandrake on the same Drive as Windows if I keep the same FileSystem? ie. FAT32???
Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Well, mimumum space is a matter of what you're installing, but I'd give yourself enough to play with. I'd create a separate partition for the installation, most installations will create it for you if required, but the space has to be there, or you can prepartition with something like partition magic. Don't forget the swap file as well. during installation, Mandrake should detect the other OS, and create the proper selection (I can't remember what Mandrake uses by default, I have lilo on mine.)

fine...but is it really necessary to make another partition for Mandrake??? Can't we use an exisiting partition other than C:\ (Default partition)?

If yes, then I hope the same data on the other partition wont be lost.

yeah. you have to make a seperate partion for linux. so format your comp. and when you put XP back on, just creat 2 partions. like a C: and a D: or if you have partition magic. you can do it in windows. another solution is installing it on another hard disk. but i think you might have to unplug one or something every time you want to use the other OS. i had both Linux and windows on my machine, and truthfully, i never used linux because i didnt want to restart to do stuff on it. i feel the best way is try to scavage up some parts and built a seperate box for linux with a KVM switch. you will prolly use it more.

You're installing an operating system...could you install Windows XP on a partition and keep the data that was there before?

You do need a separate partition. If you have partition magic, you can just make the one you need, and move the data to another one.
