Cool things we should try when Wolfram Alpha goes live.

Posted 03 May 2009 - 06:33 PM

Hi guys, I'm excited about the launch of Wolfram Alpha, and I thought to myself we should make a list of cool things to try out with this thing. Assuming the thing works as the devs say it does, this should turn out interesting.

  • Ask it when and where Napoleon died. I want to see if just answers my question.
  • Input a mathematical formula and see if it return the X and Y values.
  • Throw some trigonometry problems at it.

Let's see some crazy ideas here, I'm rather spent for the day. :pirate:

Ps. Anyone else think the URL is a bit clumsy to type out? Maybe they should register www.wa.com

Free Mathematica? That would be cool. And a refund on the 3 quarter subscription I paid for >={

And what will you say when it replies Zeppelinism, not Claptonism?

I bought Mathematica because as a student it was not too expensive, it is fantastic and extremely powerful. I was able to get lot farther on my research with mathematica than I ever would have been able to get simply on my own (perhaps that says something about my abilities but I have never been ashamed of the fact that I use computers to reach farther than my own grasp.)

Personally I would really love to buy the latest version of Mathematica but it is just WAY to expensive for a casual user. Were I safe in academia I could probably make use of it, but as it stands I just don't have the time to do more than tinker...

I have looked into some of the open source CAS products and they are just not up to the task yet.

"How old was River Phoenix in the year 2000?"

Would be interested in the results since he died 1993.
-He was 29/30? (Show no understanding the concept of death)
-He would've been 29/30 (Shows an understanding)

Luckily I get derive from the school license :)

Some questions to ask:

If today is only tomorrow yesterday, is today only yesterday tomorrow?

Ask it what is special about this lines: (I posted this in games somewhere if you want the solution)

Sir, I bear a rhyme excelling
In mystic force and magic spelling
Celestial sprites elucidate
All my own striving can't relate

Ask it this: (also from games somewhere):

As I was going to Saint Ives,
I crossed the path of seven wives.
Every wife had seven sacks,
Every sack had seven cats,
Every cat had seven kittens,
Kittens, cats, sacks, wives,
How many were going to Saint Ives?

Ask it: How much wood would a wood chuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck wood?

Ask it anything about Chuck Norris.

Ask them what is the answer to life, the universe, and everything.

Ask it if God exists.

Ask it what it means to be human.

Of course God exists. He's a great guitar player, and I loved his playing in Layla.

So Alfram is gonna be like the search engine version of texting AQA?

I'm gonna ask them how many chickens were killed as a result of bombing raids during world war II.

Got AQA with that one :D
