Desperate For Help Booting From USB

Posted 09 May 2009 - 05:05 PM

So for some reason my PC bit the dust.

To keep it simple, I am on my friends computer and I torrented a new Windows XP. I have it ISO form.

I need to know how to take my 2gb USB drive and get my computer
to boot from it and install Windows from the ISO.

Please help.
No PC = Sucks.

The PC answer would be to go buy a legit copy.

However, for the purposes of passing on educational information, an iso file is meant to be burnt onto a CD/DVD depending on what it is.

I'm not sure Windows has the ability, but Linux has the ability to map drives to images or folders, then you can treat it like a regular drive. I've never heard of it in Windows, but it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

EDIT: After thinking about your question, you should probably check your BIOS for the option to boot legacy usb devices, or something similar. But, yeah, KYA is right, you probably can't boot from an ISO image.

ok, win can boot from usb, but not in .iso form. an .iso is just a picture of what's on a disk. you need to burn that image to a cd-rom. OR, you can use a program to extract the files from the .iso just like it was a.zip or .rar and then put it on a usb that was made bootable similar to the way you would make a floppy bootable.

^ all you need to make your usb drive bootable

^for your .iso needs

I had this problem with my laptop its dvd is broken so i cant put cd's to install.

Step 1:
Find a xp cd.

Step 2:
Plug your hard drive into another computer as a slave.

Step 3:
Format your slave hard drive as a fat32

Step 4:
Copy the i386 folder from the cd to the root folder of the slave drive (something like "C:\")

Step 5:
Get a win 98SE boot disk and find the "exe" file called "smartdrv.exe" and put it on the root folder of the drive

Step 6:
Get the right DOS boot floppy for your computer.

Step 7:
Put your hard drive back into your computer as a master.

Step 8:
Boot your computer into dos.

Step 9:
Use the "cd" command to go to your hard drives directory.

Step 10:
execute the smartdrv.exe program and tell it to goto the I386 folder.

Step 11:
execute winnt.exe.

The windows Xp setup should now start.

If you cant use smartdrv.exe its ok its just gona be a whole lot slower is what im told.

if you dont understand somthing just ask the question.
