Choosing processor.

Posted 10 May 2009 - 02:03 AM

I'm building a new desktop. My problem now is choosing which type of processor to go. I'll be using the computer mainly for gaming, internet, programming. Although I have the money to burn, I don't want to spend money on things that I will not use. Any suggestion?

Should I go Intel Quad Core, i7, or just Core 2 Duo? (I don't have any preference whether it's AMD or Intel)

Considering that I'll be using this desktop to play game, should I go Core2Duo or Quad Core or i7?

now a day's Core i7 is best
but Core2Duo and Quad Core are not too bad
between these you can chose Core2Duo.

Okay, just checked i7's price just now. A bit expensive, since I have to buy 600W PSU to go with it. Not to mention electricity bill also. Not that I can't afford it, but nvm.

Why Core2Duo instead of Quad Core? Although there is very few software that takes advantage of 4 core, what about the future? I'm not too knowledgeable bout this, willing to learn though. :)

for gaming, you get more power with core2duo
for calculating (programming, render, convert), you get more power with a quad core

if you want to overclock it, think you get better away with an intel than an amd

At the moment keep with Core 2 Duo's and as you have money to burn... GET i7's!!!!!! At the moment cheapest is like $450AUD most expensive is around $2000AUD but you will need a i7 Motherboard to be compatible and I would upgrade your PowerSuplly to some thing that has SLI or Crossfire Ready with at least 2 6pins and 2 8pins.

if you have money and want to be with intel try core2extreme which gives excelent performance
I curently have
amd phenom quad core 64 bit
3gb ddr2
nvidia n force 750
my configuration is much lower cost than intel equivalent and works much beter than core2duo

I have an AMD Phenom II Quad Core and just love it! I'm not sure where you're getting your information but a 600 watt PSU is not going to run an Intel i7 along with a high end video card for gaming. I ended up with an 1100 watt PSU for my AMD Phenom II Quad Core, dual NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX's (SLI), 8 GB DDR2 and my multiple HDD's (I believe I have 6 now).

I would definitely go higher than 600 watt as you don't want to under power your high end hardware. Also, with Quad Core processors do not stick with the stock cooler that comes with it, invest in a nice high end cooler

geesh... no wonder with a rig like that.. lose one of the GC and a couple of HD's and you'll have enough with 600 watt.. I wonder what your electricity bill is :P..

thats what I call overkill.

600 watt/700 watt is regular these days when it comes to a reasonably priced gaming PC.

Even my wife's computer, Phenom II and a single NVIDIA GeForce 9800GTX takes a 750 watt PSU. I personally don't know anyone who has less than a 750 watt PSU in their system. A 600 watt isn't really enough for an i7 or a Phenom II 125 watt CPU with a high end video card

poeple these days think pc's use huge amounts of electricity, but in fact this computer would, when it's running on it's absolute max, only use about 450-500 Watt. So a 600 Watt PSU would definitely do the job.

on topic:
i7 are definitely very nice CPU's but if you are looking for something with a good performance/price comparison a Core2Duo is probably your best bet.
