Laptop through pc video card

Posted 18 May 2009 - 04:06 PM

I have little hope of being able to do this but here goes

I have a fairly old pc but the graphics card in it still does the trick(with the exception of running things that need pixel shading 3.0)

Now i'm torn between buying a laptop(which would be really really handy) or saving for a new pc. The only thing stopping me from buying a laptop is the poor graphics cards on them, they're just not meant to run high end games. So i'm wondering if theres a way for me to run a game off the laptop but make use of my pc graphics card?

kinda like distributed processing but not :P

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

No, you can't actually do that without specific hardware modifications. And there are actually laptops designed for gamers - for example the Dell XPS series. But even my Studio 15 with a video card like ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 runs pretty much every PC game quite well (like Grand Theft Auto IV or San Andreas).

Even if you could do what you are proposing, why wouldn't you just play the game on your desktop? You would have the 2 computers right next to each other anyway.

a new laptop would (specifications wise) crush my desktop except for the graphics card but i don't want to have to pay through my nose to get a laptop thats designed for games

basically i'm just looking for the cheapest way to get a rig that will run Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2 without breaking a sweat :P
