Two different beasts. They can behave like each other, but a card is basically one type or the other. If the parents are on the account backing the card, then it's not really yours.

Until you're no longer on your parents taxes and you don't live with them, they own you. You have all the rights of a toddling bed wetter and they are responsible for you. It doesn't really matter what age you are.

Move out, pay your own bills, and tell them to stick it. Until you can actually do that, your rights are out of your control.

I totally just got in a fight with my mom about something like this (look on twitter and other threads). Only mine was about the internet I pay for, and need for school. Feh. She isn't complaining about having it now though, shes on it looking for something shes never gonna buy lol. She does, however, try to get on everything I get on because she thinks I'm always on there talking shit about her. lol. She doesn't really know how to even use my mouse lol.

I think my life would be so much easier with a credit card. My credit wouldn't be so bad and my banking account wouldn't get bounced. My bills come out at retarded times, expecially in comparison to my paydays.

I will highlight that the suggestions of people here to move out and man up and such and such are at the very least resentful and show that those of you who adopted said stance couldn't find a mature resolution to your problem. You just said screw my parents I do what I want (and proceeded to move out), an attitude which you likely still harbor towards your parents. Don't impart your messed-up-Western-split-up-the-family views on others. Its the very foundation of why so many families are in the state that they're in.

To the OP I don't know what the Terms of Service are for an XBox Live account. If they reserve the right to terminate your account for whatever reason they see fit (much like Dream.In.Code reserves the right to do so), then you don't have a leg to stand on. If however, no such terms are set up you do have rights as you are legally the owner of said contract (an 18 year old can set up his own contracts despite living at home with his/her parents, said contracts are legally binding to him/her, not his/her parents).

The argument that most people are setting up here is that take a housewife for instance who has no job and lives off her husband or vice/versa (i.e. is a dependant of the bread winnder), the stay at home spouse inherently has no rights. I pay the bills so its all mine. That is a legally certifiable form of abuse, as it entreats one human being to be beneath another. However, that is an approach of a spousal nature. You too are a dependant of your parents, but not in a spousal form. Your parent's (divided equally amongst them and disparately to you) retain legal ownership of the house and of the internet connection you use (which I assume is also paid by them). Therefore, they have the right to police what gets transmitted along it. Microsoft may have come to the same conclusion.

I suggest discussing with reasonable points this issue with your parents. If you're hell bent on circumventing your parents, well the only way possible is to pay for your own satellite/wireless card service. As you can't plug in your own cables into someone else's house legally. Then Microsoft would have no justifiable reason to terminate your account (assuming that they don't reserve the right to have unjustifiable reasons for terminating your service).

LOL. I spend a ton of time with my parents. We eat dinner weekly together. I spend time over at their house. We go do things as a family often.

This thread was about Holden whining that his parents infringed on his legal rights. Not that he wanted to resolve the dispute with his parents, or show them he's responsible enough to have an Live account. Part of manning up would involve 1) not whining about it on the internet like a 12 year old 2) taking responsibility for his actions so his parents feel like they can let him do what he wants 3) talking to his parents about the situation like an adult instead of whining about it on the internet like a 12 year old.

Moving out isn't always easy. But he's 18 and still in High School! It would be different if he was out of High School, going through college and trying to work. Anyway, there's tons of people with XBox live complaints, it's not my fault you decided to sign up with shoddy service. They do all sorts of crap like this, I recommend PC for online gaming.

So basically, you haven't graduated into a member of society so-to-speak (still in High School), signed up with bad service, and you didn't already know the answer to your own question. The whole living at home thing has different views especially across countries.

So basically, hopefully, you learned what having an XBox live account really means and how these things work. I'm sure there's the common termination for any reason or no reason part in the contract too. Every MMORPG I've signed up on has that even though you can buy stuff with real money, so I'm sure Live is the same. And next time you want to play some games you'll actually read the contract this time. If you actually read the contract from Live you wouldn't be here posting about it

That happens here financially as well. I don't have a drivers license because the MVD is giving me the run around when I want to get the permit to practice driving so I can pass the test! But even if I had a license, I can't afford car insurance and I'm too responsible to drive around and add to my state's problem of people driving around without insurance or even licenses. However rates drop nicely if you marry~

Why would you even need a credit card at that age in High School? I'm actually kind of curious, because there's ways of paying for stuff online with just bank accounts (which I keep forgetting to set one up myself).
