Looking for a bookmark manager

Posted 24 May 2009 - 12:39 PM

Can any of you peeps out there recommend a decent bookmark manager?
I'd like to separate my bookmarks from my browsers and preferably serve them on the web to wherever I may be.

I've run several web searches and I keep finding projects that are either no longer active or active but old. The newest project I found was last updated in 2004.

I have my own web server so all I need is a link or two to some reasonably up to date source, preferably with a drag and drop capability.

I've been meaning to write my own but like everything I plan to do it seems to get put off until I eventually forget or find someone else's solution :P

p.s. I use Linux as my main OS but that shouldn't matter if you know of a web based app.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Lol noob. Check out XMarks. Just install it on whatever browser you're on, save some booksmarks and press Ctrl+Shift+s and BAM! Your bookmarks are saved a secure webserver.

Lol...cheers, I didn't think of checking for plugins. I was just searching for standalone solutions.

Hmm...on closer inspection I can only run parts of this on my own server.
I'm looking for a solution that I can install completely on my server and if possible have access to the source for modifying myself.

I'm turning into a regular Jerry Fletcher when it comes to storing my profile-able details online. My facebook account it spartan. After the gov. announced that they would be storing and searching our fb profiles for info about us, employers started using your social networking info to make decisions about you and ads companies bombard you with ads based on your browsing etc. I would just like this sort of info on my hardware where I can choose who can see it (i.e. just me).

My irrational paranoia aside I was also hoping to find something I could eventually develop further myself to meet whatever needs I decide I have. :D

If you are running Firefox, I believe the built in bookmark manager will do the things you need.

I can export and import the bookmarks with it but I want a central database so even if I'm at a pc with no access to the backed up bookmarks file I can still access my bookmarks.
