What are you using to measure CPU temp?
When it hangs, does it hang at the beginning? Does it freeze, or can you Ctrl+Alt+Delete out of it?

could be that the cpu fan isnt connected propaly to the cpu (intel: not clicket in all 4 "buttons" propaly or just havent got enough past on it)
did you overclock the cpu?
is it a finished built pc or did you build it yourself? or did someone else build it for you?

It's possible your graphics card is not getting sufficient cooling. Take the side cover off and sit a room fan blowing directly into the computer case, let it cool for awhile and try to start the game once again. If you are able to play longer then cooling is the culprit(this can sometimes be a classic problem with warmer weather.
You may also have a bad address on one of your ram chips...when you need more than the operating system needs it starts filling up the ram and may be hitting the bad spot which will freeze the game. If you have access to ram you know works, try swapping the ram with the known good ram.

Brent

just as a note, you're going to need to dust-out your hardware VERY often if you take this route.

sorry...should have noted that using a room fan blowing into the computer case is for troubleshooting and not intended as a long term solution
Although, I have used a room fan on a crippled server....works great till the new parts come in, was the cleanest server in the room with the make-shift fan-duster-cooler
cheers,
Brent

when you touched the actual chips(gpu and ram chips) on the card and played the game at the same time all chips were not too hot?
A room fan is the easiest way to troubleshoot for overheating, otherwise you have to somehow figure out if the temp readings are accurate.
Are you able to play other games? If so then there may be corrupt files.
Do you have another graphics intensive game to run, if so and the other game works then there may be corrupt files. Run the XP disk tools checking for errors.
Does the game crash at the same spot with every time you try to play?

great you solved your problem!
You know, for us troubleshooters it's satisfying to know we are helping the community. The other 20% of the process is having closure to the problem. We may also learn something from this cycle. Could you please reply with your solution to the first problem, many thanks.
So with this new problem we will need to know what changes/tweaks you have performed since the first problem.
While the CPU is maxing please open the "Task Manager" by right clicking on the task bar, once the "Task Manager" is opened click on the processes tab, then sort by the "CPU" column and watch which processes are pegged at 90-100%. Then reply with that info.
