VB.NET & Mono - Are you using it?

Post icon  Posted 27 May 2009 - 05:07 PM

Well, there is a question for all the VB.NET developers here. As you know, the open-source Mono platform (http://mono-project.com/Main_Page) has support for VB.NET programming (not as extensive as for C#, but still - http://www.mono-proj...m/Visual_Basic). I tried using it only once on Ubuntu and wasn't quite satisfied since it had troubles configuring the compiler.

So, for those who are using VB.NET, share your expereiences with VB.NET & Mono here.
Are you using it?
If yes, are you using exclusively Mono or with the Microsoft .NET at the same time?
What made you go for Mono?
How satisfied are you with VB.NET development on Mono?

These are just a few basic questions and you are welcome to share any of your comments regarding the topic. :)

I did not vote in the poll as I'm not using Mono with vb.net (not a vb guy), but I have and do use it pretty extensively with C#. I'd be interested to see the results myself. I've always assumed that most vb.net developers would be relatively dedicated to Microsoft development, whereby the C# community is more widely spread. That's just an assumption based on experience though...let the polling begin! :)

I'm with Amadeus... I will be using it mostly with C# and not VB. But I may try VB out... we'll see.

I havent followed the link but is it Linux only or can Windows use it?

There is an OpenSource windows environment that some of us are working on that if all goes well with waht we have will enable use to port different compilers into the environment.

Such as PHP, ASP (VB/CS), VB/CS/CPP, Java, Pearl, etc. Currently working on the most common Visual Studio languages (excluding F#). Getting interface problems resolved but with some help should be able to get the interface problems resolved and focus on the back end.

Yes, Mono works on Windows.

And Mono is not an IDE. Mono is a development framework (a set of libraries to facilitate development).

Being a .NET developer who recently moved to Linux I was sure I would start using Mono. However I've found myself not really that interested. I've never learned as much C++ as I have since I switched platform and I'm really enjoying my possibilities for creating great cross-platform applications. I'm not completely ruling out that I might try out Mono some time. But I don't really see myself wanting back towards .NET anytime soon. :)

Regards
Sigurd

I've used mono on Linux, but really prefer writing C# in windows.

I've used Mono (older versions) and found it to be lacking compared to C#. I haven't tried any new releases as of yet (probably because my Ubuntu dual-boot is no more), plus I figured I'd wait until it was a little more refined.

Worth noting that Mono will never have the same functionality as the current .NET framework version...it will always be slightly behind in terms of evolution.

it works on windows as well - although with the same caveat as above.

It will be more than slightly behind without the new features .NET introduces (including WPF, WCF and Silverlight).

It's an evolutionary development cycle...when a new .NET framework version releases, Mono then has to assess those changes, decide whether or not to include them, and then develop them if the answer is yes.

I use monodevelop on my ubuntu box but of course there is nothing like being native. so i only use it when i wanna develop linux applications in c# (since only vb.net support is poor and only asp.net is really supported). But generally monodevelop is not a bad application. since it's meant to be a good replacement for .net developers willing to ditch windows. :^:
