windows xp black freezes at windows logo

Posted 27 May 2009 - 08:30 PM

Hello
I have a dell E510,I bought a new hard drive (500GB) with 2G mem, loaded windows xp black with ep 2.
The 1st time I booted it up I was able to get reg mode, now I can onle get in by going in safemode and can't even boot into safemode with networking.
Now when I try to boot in reg mode, system freezes at windows logo where blue bar on bottom is.
I can build an awsome computer but when it comes to solving program and trouble shooting problems, I dont have a clue.
Can someone please help.
Mike

The truth is, this is what you get for loading a non OEM copy of Windows. You get what you pay for.

I'm trying to remember a common registry error that causes Windows to hang, but it's ... like on the end of my tongue.

What happens when you try to boot into command prompt only? Does mup.dll (or whatever it is) load? Or does it hang there?

After some screwing around, I found what I was looking for.

Before mucking around with any files in the system32 folder, be sure to make a backup of it :)

Check the file date stamp on C:\windows\system32\USERINIT.EXE If it's file date is recent or if there are any suspicious issues with the file (like other similar named variants) try renaming it to WSAUPDATER.EXE & reboot. It's possible that spyware or a virus hooked the file. It's a common target of attack, as it's one of the items ran at boot time.

Since you are not using a genuine copy of Microsoft Windows, yes, there may be malware already bundled with your system.

Well, you did say you installed windows xp black. Where did you get that? Assuming since it's not OEM you torrent downloaded it or Warez.

Well unfortunately this is what happens when you use pirated software. When you download and install a pirated OS you're pretty much stuck unless you go buy a legitimate copy. Unfortunately we cannot help you fix a pirated copy of Windows, that's not the kind of help we offer here.
