does it matter to much which university you go to?

Posted 04 June 2009 - 12:45 PM

hi

I'm doing a software development course at college BTEC and I'm also doing a maths A level I'm thinking of going into the area of AI (robotics hopefully) I'm just wondering if going to a red brick university matters as much as it did in the past and if it still weight heavily on employer to how they chose in getting a job as I will have to more away if I go to a red brick university.

also thinking of maybe taking a year out before going would you ill advises it?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Different universities provide a different level of education. So I'm pretty sure that the choice of university is a major factor for your success.

i believe that success is largely dependent on the person as well. I generally do not believe a uni to be a huge limiting factor if u got the desire to learn.

I agree, most universities have the same basic curriculum. If you're eager to learn, you'll learn what you need

In the end, you'll get out of school what you put into it.

Sure, going to be a bigger and better University can definitely help you, but it won't make or break you. You can be taught the fundamentals of programming and all that, but you can't be taught to be a good programmer. That all comes down to how much you work at it.

Heck, some people don't go to college at all and they end up being amazing programmers making tons of money.

It all depends on the person.

The better the school, the better the chance you have of getting a job when you graduate. After you get a job, and the longer you're working in the industry for, the less anyone cares what college you went to.

Best way is to tour the campus and get a feel for the computing department. A particularly savvy prospective student will check the HR of local employers and ask them what their opinion of the computer science(or whatever your degree of choice is) graduates from that university is.

would the employers really tell you if you phoned them up and asked about it?

wouldn't you not just get thought to a sectary that doesn't normally know?

what would you suggest in asking the larger companies like sony or google?

They probably wont openly bash the school if they think the school is crap. However you can figure out their opinion based more on their approach to describing the university than their actual words. Obviously if they gush about the university and how they always recruit graduates from there that's a good sign. However if they seem to give a vague answer or evade answering the question then their opinion of the school is probably neutral or worse. Contacting Sony or Google probably wouldn't do you much good unless they operate near the university you are considering. Also small local companies are more likely to be honest with you about their opinions of a college than a large corporation.

But in the end most tech companies (especially for programming jobs) are more interested in your previous work than the university name on your diploma. I'm willing to bet nearly all savvy tech employers will hire an applicant from a small obscure school but has an awesome portfolio over an MIT grad with a mediocre portfolio.
