Anyway -- my point really is just that I think our understanding of animal intelligence is limited by cultures that have a egotistical arrogance about man's superiority over animals. We have built skyscrapers, airplanes, lunar landers, and the internet -- giving Rover credit for understanding, "go find your bunny" does not seem like much of a threat to our achievements.

The animals know how to do these things as well.. They just let us do it for them before they 'take over ze world'.

They have already taken over. Think about it. Who picks up whose poo? Who feeds, grooms and bathes who? Who goes to work and who lays around all day?

That's more dogs than cats, but yes, they own you.

"In ancient times cats were worshipped as gods; they have not forgotten this." - Terry Pratchett

If a dog does something bad, they'll often look contrite, tail between the legs and all that. A cat will just look at you like "Yeah, so? Deal with it, monkey boy."

I think my cats are real a-holes. The one shits where ever it feels like and then looks at you like "Oh I went there, and after you feed my fat ass I will go there again!"

Not my cat - when he has done bad (and realizes that I have discovered it) he is very contrite. He lowers his head and runs down to the bed and waits until I am done lecturing him. Yes thats right -- I punish my cat by talking to him and forcing him to sit and listen to it (hey it worked for my mother).

Hmm... my cat will behave suitably sorry when the verbal dress down begins. However, until then, he ain't admitting northing. He'll act like nothing is wrong until the discovery and outrage. He also tends to interpret the rules as "don't do that (when you're looking)."

Dogs, on the other hand, will often act busted from minute one. They'll give away they've done something wrong long before you have to figure it out.

Agreed. You have to bust a cat -- as far as they are concerned, what you don't know is something they got away with. If you walk into a room while the act is fresh often you can catch them looking guilty as they try to make an exit, but if you see them 2mins later they act perfectly innocent.

Dog's however have a sense of shame/(fear of getting in trouble) and will often look guilty just because they know they did wrong.

Wheee!! I have my dog here visiting. We'll be staying up late talking about girlzz.. Fortunately we have completely different taste in girls so there's never any competition or rivalry between us.
