Hi

I've just come been given six computer systems and I want to reinstall XP.
The problem is that I do not have the original CD, even though I wish to format each system (as it has files on there and the Administration password been lost).

I do however have two other XP CDs, which come with licence keys. When I've tried using these previously, they only install if the CD and key match.
Each system is Genuine.

So how can I reinstall XP?


If you want to know, I'll either be using these PCs for my own use, or selling them. They are Pentium 4 processors, and the rest can be updated.

If they all have XP on them already then you could use something like http://magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/ to find there current product keys and then use the Discs you have to install a new copy of XP on them.

I have the product key already, it is on the little sticker.
However, with this PC I am using, when I tried the CD B with Key A it did not work. I would normally just jump straight in and test it again, however I hate the risk of lsoing XP on that machine.

How about downloading Virtual PC http://www.microsoft...;displaylang=en and trying to install it with that Product Key

Edit: just thought of a reason why it may have failed before, The licence key has to match the CD Licence type for example Your licence key might be for XP home but if you have a XP Pro disc it wont work, same goes for the software type (OEM etc.). I think i'm correct

That's not what I mean tommy, sorry.

I just want to reinstall XP on a computer that already has it.
I do not have the original CD, but I do have the product key.

How do I install without the CD?



EDIT: Just read your edit. I do have the pro CD and the product key is Pro. Will this work?

I think i'm correct in saying it will work, but what i was trying to say is if you download Virtual PC first then you can test it works before doing it on your live system.

Since these units are intended for resale, can you install them with the 60 day trial period, & request the purchaser to register & pay for the license? Just making sure to inform them of this of course.

Im a little confused here, a genuine windows key from PC will work with any install. If you mean you don't have the CD then why don't you just download XP then use the genuine key.

There is no reason that it wouldn't work.

Yes that will work as long it is the same version (Pro, Home etc..) as the key is intended for

Wait I wasn't trying to contradict you, I was wondering why your original idea had not been accepted. Since you were right.
