I you right click your connection and then click properties, then click the status tab it will list your IP and gateway address, in fact just tell me all three :)

IP
SUBNET
GATEWAY

desn't that leave my system vulnerable to hacking??

Nope you thinking of you outgoing IP or the address the internet sees, this is only your local IP address.

This seems a bit more complicated than I thought :s

Try using firefox or a different browser, if you don't wanna do that then try something such as msn messenger, if it connects then you could have some kind of conflict with internet explorer.

Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.
Click the Services tab, disable all the services, and then click OK.
Restart the computer, and test Internet Explorer.

They seem correct, it should be working with those address's, why don't you try to access your router with the gateway address in internet explorer, just type it into the address bar.

Your router may have diagnostics on it,

Hmmm that is odd, glad its working for you though. If it happens again try the msconfig step that I posted earlier and tell me if it works. :^:

I have had the problem before where i have acidentally set the static ip to one already on the network and the other stops working next time it is turned on so if it is static change it to automatic and if it is already automatic release and renew the ip.

have you checked the config on the router?

Edit: oppps didn't read page two before posting lol
