Dual Boot

Posted 16 June 2009 - 08:05 AM

hey guys i was wondering whether there was any software where you can switch between OS's instead of having to shutdown and then boot from the other one.
I'm pretty sure there is one for mac but i need one for the PC :)

IIRC (from a months back so probably not), you actually have to reboot with Bootcamp @ Mac also.

I don't think it's possible, you can always use a Virtual Machine if you need a diff OS quickly.

It would get a seperate internal IP for that computer, I don't think Virtual PC supports network adapter bridging, not sure.

If it doesn't, you could probably forward a port to an internal port on that computer anyway, so it shouldn't be too much of an issue. If you're planning on running a server I'd setup VMWare Server 2 (it's free) and use it's virtual bridged card, then you can setup any IP on your internal network that you'd like.

EDIT: I lied.

VMware also allows you to have each PC get their own IP address, or IP tunnel (use the main computer's IP address) you set it in the settings for the VM.

The last version I tried didn't work with Vista - does Virtual PC 2007?

Awesome, thanks. I plan on converting my current machine to a game/file server when I build a new one sometime this year.

No problem, I would seriously recommend Windows Server 2008 as a server OS, it's absolutely brilliant.

We're just done migrating all of our Win Server 2003 systems, just like we did from Linux. Keeps getting better and better :)

Grub allows you to boot multiple operating systems, a virtual machine is not good because you must run another operating systemin order to use it which is going to take up alot of resources.
