Running VS project on machine with just the runtime

Posted 07 July 2009 - 02:34 AM

Hi guys,
I wanted to try one of my programs on a machine that doesn't have VS on it, just to see what it does. It's quite an old machine with Vista on it, but it misses a lot of windows updates. But I did update .Net framework to 3.5 and SP1.

Now when I run my program, all goes well but when I exit it I get the message the program has stopped working and this:

Beschrijving:
  Stopped working

Probleemhandtekening:
  Gebeurtenisnaam van probleem:	CLR20r3
  Probleemhandtekening 01:	bestandszoeker-winform.exe
  Probleemhandtekening 02:	1.0.0.0
  Probleemhandtekening 03:	4a513ebd
  Probleemhandtekening 04:	mscorlib
  Probleemhandtekening 05:	2.0.0.0
  Probleemhandtekening 06:	48ead7c2
  Probleemhandtekening 07:	343f
  Probleemhandtekening 08:	119
  Probleemhandtekening 09:	System.IO.DirectoryNotFound
  Versie van besturingssysteem:	6.0.6000.2.0.0.768.2
  Landinstelling-id:	1043

I also tried copying over the full /bin/release folder, same thing. Now I'm googling those EventType's(apparantly thats the translation for probleemhandtekening) but it's not really helping and I got a feeling I'm missing something obvious.
Any help is appreciated :)

Is your application using a folder somewhere on the user computer? The System.IO.DirectoryNotFound shows you the exact exception that is caused by a folder that cannot be found on the user's computer.

Well it's a small program that searches the harddisk for a filename the user specifies. So I suppose if that works on my main pc it should work anywhere. And all I added further was an icon to the main form. I tried copying over the full project folder and that didn't help...bit puzzled now. The weird part is that everything works fine, but when I close it this happens.

Would you be able to post the code here? There could be some reference to another folder that is accessed when the application runs. Also, my recommendation would be implementing exception handlers.

Thanks for the help Core, I found it! I knew it was something obvious....it turned out I didn't comment out some test code in the program.cs and I didn't notice a thing from it on this machine, but since it was referring to some test folder I made it made the app crash on the other machine...feel kinda stupid now...but am glad it works :)
