Well, Red Hat proper costs money. It's also not the latest software. The closest thing you'll get to Red Hat without paying is CentOS. For something kind of like Red Hat with all the newest toys, Fedora. Since Red Hat is consumer focused, you generally wont find answers specific to your questions for it on line, more for Fedora.
Ubuntu is huge; for a reason. It's what I use, mostly because pulling out the guts of my Linux distro and tweaking them lost it's charm a while ago. For support, do a search on anything with ubuntu in the name and you'll find something. Many guides and instruction sets seem to favor the distro.
For a newbie distro, Ubuntu is also a preferred choice.

Ubuntu is probably the more preffered choice. Red Hat is a bit out of use.
I vote Ubuntu.

from the choices given..i'd say ubuntu...but if you really want to get a good handle on what linux has to offer, i suggest getting a virtual machine program (VMware and VirtualPC2007 are ones i use) and download some ISO's of Ubuntu, Fedora, Slackware, BackTrack (which is a specialized version of slackware focused on security and penetration testing) and just anything else you want to try out...thats the best way ive found to test linux distro flavors

Experience but no learning : Ubuntu
Learn how Linux works, but get a pain in the neck experience : Anything else
I suggest anything else.

I agree with no2pencil on the ubuntu part. However, there are other distros that are similar in that they do a lot for you.
If you really want to learn you could always do the linux from scratch, but I'm not sure how well it would work for daily use.
I would personally suggest using gentoo to learn, and not the live install they have. Doing everything from command line, from partitioning the drive to compiling xorg. It will actually be useable and will show you how a lot of the stuff works and it will also give you a true appreciation for how much work was put into ubuntu to make it easy to use. (WARNING: Not for the type that gives up easily. I had to restart the installation three times before I had it right, but I learned more about computers than I did in years with windows)

I strongly suggest Mandriva for several reasons that I won't go into... Been there done that, absolutely pointless.

I started using Ubuntu a little over a year ago, since then I havent looked back. Even removed Vista off my lappy to run Ubuntu full time.

Ubuntu if you want to see what Linux looks like. If you want to actually know how Linux works I would suggest Slackware. I've been using it for the last 2 years and simply love it.
