Oh a hard topic to explain...

Think of it as this, pick a spot that is like 15 pixels height or width. Think that if you streched that, would it look the same all the way through.

You must make the image that can strech without looking "distorted" a background image. Since this subject has too many variables, try to figure it out on your own.

That is what I did, and I can code a good layout in about 2 hours.

Maybe later on, I could code it for you! Not now :D

Are you using tables in Dreamweaver to create your site? And is your design in Photoshop?

If so...

Using the guides in Photoshop, divide your design up into the different sections e.g. banner, buttons (each individual button), content etc, when doing this bear in mind any section that will need to be changed due to different content as you don't want to accidentally divide this up.

After you have all your guides in place using the marquee tool select the sections individually, crop the image leaving you with one of your sections then go to file > save for web and export the section as a gif for graphics or save as and jpg for images. Then undo the crop and repeat for each section, using two different crops for the buttons the roll over state and the normal state.

Think of it as a big jigsaw, and the less sections you use the easier it is to put it back together again. This is essentially what the slice tool does only it does all of the sections at once stopping you from having to do them all individually saving time and effort.

Then in Dreamweaver set up your tables and import all the bits. I don't know if you've ever done this before? But it will get easier the more you do it.

If it is a static site, I would seriously consider doing it in CSS over using tables in Dreamweaver. It took me a while to get my head around the tables in Dreamweaver and it can quite quickly become a nightmare, I found learning CSS and the little amout of HTML needed for the content a much easier method to learn and it's alot quicker, and more to the point you don't have to use Dreamweaver!

Hope I haven't confused you.

Don't marquee and crop, then un-crop each section; this is a big waste of your time. Instead place your grid line where you want your sections, then use the slice tool. This slice tool will sorta act like a marquee and create a blue box with a number. Use this tool for all your section and you will end up with a bunch of blue boxes all over your image labeled by a slice number. Once done with your image Save for web.
