Network Speed! Mbps - Gbps

Posted 18 September 2009 - 10:57 AM

hi, i was wondering i have a 100 mbps network card and i know that those speeds are for my networks only and how would gigabyte change not only my network speed but the internet speed. for example downloads, torrents, uploads, video streaming, etc... would it change the speeds? i know that i have to have a router that has gigabyte enabled but do you have to have a gigabyte cable modem, od they exist. because you have to pass an ethernet wire fromt he modem to the router so that wire has to be gigabyte suppoetive?? right??

thanks for the responses. and this is just out of curiosity, i'm planning on switching to gigabyte soon!

Your top speed will depend on the lowest speed on the chain. Most ISPs only allow for under 1 mb upload & 2 to 3 mb down. You'll have to check with your ISP, but there is no way that Gigabit networking equipment will effect this speed.
